Using a pick up stick is an extremely versatile creative and fun way of introducing pattern and texture in your weaving.
Weaving patterns with pick up sticks.
To weave a weft float you place the heddle in neutral and tip the stick up on its edge so just the yarns on the stick are up.
A rigid heddle loom has 2 shafts essentially the hole threads and the slot threads.
This class assumes that you have the ability to warp and dress your own loom without assistance and are reasonably comfortable doing so.
To weave a warp float place the heddle in the up position and slide the stick towards the heddle.
These 2 shafts allow you to work plain weave which is a perfectly lovely weave structure on it s own but most weavers will begin with plain weave and then want to increase their own skills and their loom s capabilities.
3 1 lace insert pattern stick 1 up 1 down repeated across 1.
The yarns are picked up behind the heddle and the stick is left in the warp to be used when the weaver wants to use it to create floats breaking the over under pattern of plain weave.
Using a pick up stick to weave 3 1 lace and 5 1 lace.
Weaving patterns using pick up sticks this is a follow on workshop for those who have previously attended weave a scarf in a day or for anyone familiar with using a rigid heddle loom.
With a pick up stick you can easily pass over more than one warp end to create lace spot weaves honeycomb and other interesting patterns.
For a rigid heddle loom they are a wonderful discovery.
